Sepsis Initiative

Sepsis is a life-threatening response to infection that is a leading cause of hospitalization, hospital mortality, and long-term morbidity. HMS’s sepsis initiative was launched in 2021 and fully implemented in all 68 HMS hospitals in early 2023. We work to reduce both short-term mortality and long-term morbidity of sepsis throughout the state of Michigan (and beyond) through audit and feedback, education, facilitated implementation of best practices, and sharing of successes and challenges between our hospitals. We focus broadly on sepsis care from initial presentation through post-hospital follow-up. Our work is informed by a detailed sepsis registry including patient-reported outcomes collected 60 days post-discharge.

We regularly present the findings of our research and large-scale quality improvement at professional society conferences, including the American Thoracic Society, Infectious Disease Week, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Society of Hospital Medicine. Since 2022, we have partnered with the CDC to develop, publish, and disseminate the CDC’s Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements, which serve as a “manager’s guide” to establishing and running effective programs to monitor and optimize hospital sepsis care.

Sepsis Alliance Institute Webinar

This webinar was conducted in partnership with the Sepsis Alliance Institute. This presentation begins with Dr. Prescott introducing participants to HMS and discussing why HMS and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan identified sepsis as a priority for Michigan hospitals. HMS data provided to participating sites is reviewed with examples of how sites are utilizing the data, tools, and resources provided by HMS to drive quality improvement and education at their sites. Following Dr. Prescott’s presentation is a panel session that engages HMS physicians, BCBSM leadership, a Sepsis Quality Improvement Consultant, and a physician representative from an HMS participating site.

National Forum on Sepsis

The 2023 National Forum on Sepsis was held in Washington DC on September 13th, 2023–World Sepsis Day. The entire event was streamed globally and viewed by hundreds of people in more than 35 countries.

Dr. Hallie Prescott presented during Panel 2: New Data and New Ideas on a National Approach to Quality Improvement. She presented on HMS, the HMS Sepsis Initiative, and key features associated with success in quality improvement related to sepsis. HMS was recognized by the END SEPSIS initiative and many of the panelists of the session as a national leader in quality improvement in sepsis, which is a testament to the work and contributions of all HMS member sites and representatives.

HMS Sepsis Toolkit Launch Webinar

Conducted on 11/16/2023, this webinar launched the HMS Sepsis Toolkit and provides an overview of the information that is housed within it. See our HMS Sepsis Toolkit page for more information.

HMS/MHA Sepsis Symposium

Conducted on 10/1/2020, HMS partnered partnered with the MHA Keystone Center to host a day-long virtual sepsis symposium to educate participants around sepsis management, current sepsis work at the state and national levels and link between Sepsis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the day-long symposium, attendees heard from national speakers, including Dr. Runa Gokhale, medical officer, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, who discussed the sepsis efforts at the CDC. In addition, Dr. Reena Duseja, Director, Division of Quality Measurement, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, spoke on national policies around sepsis.
