The Antimicrobial Use Initiative is dedicated to promoting the safe, effective, and responsible use of antibiotics. By ensuring the right antibiotic is used for the right condition and for the right duration, we aim to reduce complications and combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance across populations.

Current Focus Areas:

  • Limiting antibiotic use for uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) to five days.
  • Reducing testing and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB).

Past Efforts Included:

  • Decreasing fluoroquinolone use in patients with positive urine cultures and uncomplicated CAP.
  • Avoiding unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotics for uncomplicated CAP.
  • Preventing overuse of antibiotics for questionable pneumonia cases.

Through these targeted strategies, HMS is improving care quality while preserving the effectiveness of life-saving antibiotics for future generations.

  • HMS Antimicrobial Use Toolkit

The Antimicrobial Use (ABX) Toolkit is a repository of resources that can be utilized by hospitals to assist with quality improvement related to appropriate antibiotic utilization for patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia and Urinary Tract Infections.
