Karrie Mungin, MSN, RN
Sepsis Abstractor Representative
My nursing journey began at Mid-Michigan Community College where I earned an Associate Degree in Nursing followed by completion of my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Ferris State University. During my undergraduate studies, I collaborated with the Education Department to build a foundation for a mentor program providing a support system for onboarding nurses. I continued the journey earning my Master’s Degree in Nursing from Chamberlin University completing my capstone project with a Pain Management Escape room, developed in partnership with the Education Department to enhance the pain resource program.
As a master’s-prepared nurse with nine years’ experience in critical care, I have developed a strong foundation in clinical excellence, process improvement and Shared Governance. For seven years I served as chair and active member of multiple system-level practice councils leading initiatives to lift morale and improve patient care. My efforts contributed to the Logo Wear policy changes, assisting with establishment of Meds to Beds program providing patients with their medications at bedside before discharge, standardizing a process for handoff between ED and Critical Care units for patient safety. Additionally, I monitored and analyzed NDNQI data to support performance improvement and quality outcomes.
In my current role as a Data Specialist RN II and sepsis abstractor, I have found my “niche” in nursing quality improvement where data drives the need for change. Serving as the A3 Project Lead, I recently facilitated a system-wide process for timely delivery of First Dose IV PUSH antibiotics in the Emergency Departments to improve HMS Sepsis Performance Measure Increased Delivery of antibiotics within 3 hours of Arrival for sepsis patients with hypotension. The Sepsis Data, Design, & Publications (DDP) Abstractor Representative role is an opportunity to utilize nursing knowledge and abstraction experience to progress the Collaborative to improve patient outcomes. My goal is to incorporate voices of all abstractors and foster collaboration to achieve project targets and advance quality patient care in sepsis.
