HMS Publishes MAGIC Oncology in Annals of Internal Medicine
Safe and reliable venous access is crucial for effective cancer care, but vascular access devices (VADs) carry risks such as infection and blood clots. To guide VAD selection and management for cancer patients, HMS convened 9-member international expert panel using the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method to develop recommendations based on factors like cancer type, treatment urgency, and how long the device would be needed. The resulting Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters in Adult Patients With Cancer (MAGIC-ONC) published in Annals of Internal Medicine provides evidence-based recommendations intended to improve care quality, reduce complications, and enhance safety in vascular access for cancer patients.
